Always Welcome On Wagner Street

Don is my neighbor and was a great friend. When ever i walked by him when he was washing the car, or just whenever, he would always take time to say,"Hi Grace. How have you been? I hope you are doing well." It just made my day. In late August, the day of Don's death, my brother, my mom, and I were at the shopping mall. My mom got a call from one of our neighbors whose daughter was in San Diego with Don. My mom said hello, and then her voice got really quiet. "Oh. Oh my gosh, poor Ashley! And Tamiko, oh God." When she hung up, I knew something wasn't quite right. I said,"Mom, what's wrong?" She said," Don passed away. Two minutes before the Wilsons got there." The Wilsons are our neighbors who drove to San Diego to give him a care package, including a card I had made for him. He never got to read it. I immediately started to cry. My younger brother barely cries at the deaths of other people, but he broke down too. I could not believe someone as nice, sweet, nurturing, and as generous as Don was is now gone forever. Our block party that year was dedicated to him. It was still fun, but it was also sad to know this fun event was a memorial service as well. I will miss Don, but he should know that he will have a place in everyone's heart, and he is always welcome on Wagner Street. -Grace Gauvreau, Don's neighbor 12 years old
